20 women workers among dead in factory incident in unregulated Pakistan

Dear All,

On 9th February 2012 Women Workers Help Line's team visited
the collapsed factory to observe the current situation. Where they found that even
after passing three days a huge quantity of distorted building material was
still to be removed and several women and children were still unfound. Their
relatives were waiting their loved one's live or dead with tears in their eyes.  Later on WWHL's team which was consisted
12 women activists also visited to the homes of women workers who were found
dead after this incident.  No government
official and political representative visited their homes to give any relief to
the relatives of the workers who died in this unfortunate incident. So far in
this incident 28 bodies have been found from the debris and 20 of them are
women and 5 were children.

Representatives of Women Workers Helpline reached at the
spot immediately and noticed that no any government officials were reached at
the point. They protested against the behavior of government and demanded that
heavy machinery should be provided to rescue the people. After long time
protest there were heavy machinery provided and rescue officials started their
work with that.
Some workers who survived after this sad incident told WWHL's
team that the building was in very deprived form workers also complaint about
that but the owner did not take notice. They also told that women workers were
paid only Rs. 3000 to 4000 per month, there were child labor were employed and
5 of them were among the dead; they also demanded:

1.    1. Cancel the license of factory
2.     2.   Took legal action against owner of the factory
and responsible government officials
3.    3.   Labor inspection must be ensured in factories to
avoid such incidents in future
4.    4.    Free and proper
medical facilities must be ensured for injured workers
5.    5.   Appropriate compensation must be paid to the
relatives of dead workers and injured workers also

w  we have decide to take action on all these happenings and Women Workers Help Line is going to organize a press conference in front of press club with the relatives of dead and injured workers & leadership of Women Workers Help Line on 11th Feb, 2012 at 3:00 pm
