BLA kills 15 soldiers near Quetta

* Militants attack four FC checkposts near Margat coalmine

* Forces launch massive search, recover seven bodies

By Mohammad Zafar

QUETTA: At least 15 personnel of the Frontier Corps (FC) were killed and 12 others were injured when Baloch militants attacked four FC checkposts near Margat coalmines.

The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack and termed the deadly attack a reaction to the killings of grand daughter and great-grand daughter of Nawab Akbar Bugti.

The incident took place late on Tuesday night and exchange of fire lasted for more than five hours. "Assailants armed with sophisticated and small weapons opened fire on security personnel deployed at four FC checkposts. A convoy of the Frontier Corps was sent immediately for aid and it was also attacked with remote-controlled devices," spokesperson of the Frontier Corps said, adding that 15 personnel had died while 12 others were injured.

The bodies and injured were shifted to a hospital in Quetta where the condition of most of the injured is stated to be stable.

"The evidence indicates that this deadly attack was carried out on the directives of Mir Hairbyar Marri who sought asylum in Europe. A stern action will be taken against him," stated a press release issued by the FC.

He said it is not unknown about the causalities the militants suffered when security forces returned fire.

A BLA spokesperson, who introduced himself as Mirak Baloch, while talking to the local media, said that his organisation had carried out the attack. He claimed that over 30 security personnel had died in the ambush.

"It is a reaction to the killings of grand daughter and great-grand-daughter of Nawab Akbar Bugti in Karachi," he told the media from an unspecified location.

Frontier Corps Inspector General Major General Ubaidullah Khan, in his statement, said that FC will take all necessary steps to retain peace in Balochistan. "The elements destabilising the region at the behest of enemy countries will fail to achieve their objective," he said, assuring strong and firm reply to these attacks to retain peace.
