ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday called upon Prime Minister Gilani to rein in the intelligence agencies and alsoasked the chief of the army staff to take steps to protect the image and reputation of the army.

"It is the army of Pakistan, not a mafia. I ask the army chief to protect the image and reputation of the army," Ch Nisar said while speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly in which he condemned the killing of four youths in the custody of an intelligence agency.

Nisar recalled that eleven people were released from a jail on the orders of different courts but were immediately picked up by personnel of intelligence agencies and later, the tortured bodies of four of them were found on a roadside. "If they were guilty of committing any crime they should have been tried in court," he said.

Nisar regretted that the government raises hue and cry when its own interests come under threat but did not take up the issue of four people who were Hufaz-e-Quran and were engaged in the business of printing the holy Quran. "I ask whether a Muslim who offers prayers five times and who is a Hafiz-e-Quran can be a terrorist," he said, adding, it was the duty of the members of the House to raise their voice against such acts.

Ch Nisar also demanded that the head of this particular intelligence agency should be summoned to this House, adding that the acts of intelligence agencies were becoming intolerable. "Keeping silent in this situation will be no less than a crime," he said.

Nisar said the intelligence agency at first refused to accept that the eleven missing persons were in its custody but later admitted to having picked them up. Nisar also called upon all members of the House to come to the Supreme Court at the next date of hearing.

On the 20th amendment, the opposition leader said the government had appointed four retired judges as members of the election commission but their terms and conditions had not been decided for the last eight months and the commission remained incomplete.

Nisar said the opposition parties were ready to give indemnity to the government for its wrongdoings but their demand was an independent election commission and an impartial caretaker set-up to supervise transparent elections. He said it was time to move towards fresh general elections.

On the recent increase in petroleum products, Nisar said in the last 10 years the prices had been increased 100 times, which was a big on the people of Pakistan. "What is this petroleum development levy? It is a jagga tax," he said.
